The territory of the Commune of Macchiagodena has a quite various conformation, modelled by the relieves in the north-west of Valle Fredda, and in the east by the heights of Monacello and Confalone Hills (1348 m. on the sea-level).
In the North, the geomorphology of the territory is stressed by mountainous relieves, while in the South the geomorphology changes because of natural terraces degrading towards the plain of Bojano as far as 511 m. on the sea-level. The presence of waters, coming above all from Valle Fredda, stresses the hill relieves plasticity, marking their aspect with deep gorges and ditches.
All in all, the territory is part of an area delimited by the Matese massif and the valley floor depression of the Plain of Bojano, where the large roads and the heights of the High Molise run. The geological conformation is constituted of calcareous rocks, sandstones and clays; the last ones expand from the valley side of the present village in the South-East to the valley floor.
The principal wealth of the examined territory is the abundance of water, which reaches the top in the resort of Valle Fredda, as well as the numerous sources spread along the hill slopes of Macchiagodena.
The identified archaeological settlements are linked to the territory for the numerous sources of water, like for example the italic temple of Valle Fredda, situated near the homonymous source along the little cattle-track arm linking up the Pescasseroli-Candela with the High Molise.
The latest topographic surveys allowed to identify in the same area a wide settlement called with the local toponym “Capoccia”, where a remarkable quantity of fictil material has been highlighted, including tiles and black paint pottery Bell A.
